About the Adam and Eve painting in Eve’s Office
In case if you are wondering about the Adam and Eve painting in Netflix drama series Dark, it is Adam and Eve by German Renaissance master Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). He created the pair of paintings c. 1510-20. The pair are currently housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Click on the images below for the hi-res version. Enjoy and you are very welcome.
The two characters are portrayed, in two different panels, on a dark background, standing on a barely visible ground. Both hold two small branches which cover their sexual organs. Eve holds the traditional apple, with the serpent coming to her from above from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam is shown scratching the right crown part of his scalp.
This is a worthy complement to The Fall of the Damned painting hanging in Adam’s Sic Mindus headquarters. Alluding to the opposing position and philosophy between Martha (Eve) and Jonas (Adam).
Other versions of Adam and Eve by the same artist
Lucas Cranach painted several versions of Adam and Eve over the years. Cranach often painted religious subjects in the Catholic tradition and later trying to find new ways of conveying Lutheran religious concerns in art.
The Painting in Adam’s Office is “The Fall of the Damned” by Peter Paul Rubens ca. 1620
What about the painting that was hanging in Sic Mundus headquarters and Adam’s office? It is The Fall of the Damned, alternately known as The Fall of the Rebel Angels is a monumental religious painting by Peter Paul Rubens in 1620.
Painted on oak panels and measuring 286 × 224 cm (9 ft 4.6 in × 7 ft 4.2 in), it depicts a mass of bodies of the defeated army of Satan being hurled into the abyss after their battle with the archangel Michael.
This magnificent painting possibly reflects Adam’s state of mind when he ponders the evil deeds he needs to do in order to engineer the final end of suffering for himself and the ones he loved.
